An alternative methodology to predict aging effects on the mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced cement (GRC)

The effect of three different aging methods (immersion in hot water, freeze–thaw cycles and wet–dry cycles) on the mechanical properties of GRC were studied and compared. Test results showed that immersion in hot water may be an unreliable method for modified GRC formulations, with it being in probability a very harmful procedure. A new aging method, mixing freeze–thaw cycles and wet–dry cycles, seems to be the most accurate simulation of weather conditions that produce a noticeable change in GRC mechanical properties. Future work should be carried out to find a correlation between real weather and the proposed aging method

Structures of bacterial kynurenine formamidase reveal a crowded binuclear zinc catalytic site primed to generate a potent nucleophile

Tryptophan is an important precursor for chemical entities that ultimately support the biosynthesis of key metabolites. The second stage of tryptophan catabolism is catalysed by kynurenine formamidase, an enzyme that is different between eukaryotes and prokaryotes. In the present study, we characterize the catalytic properties and present the crystal structures of three bacterial kynurenine formamidases. The structures reveal a new amidase protein fold, a highly organized and distinctive binuclear Zn2+ catalytic centre in a confined, hydrophobic and relatively rigid active site. The structure of a complex with 2-aminoacetophenone delineates aspects of molecular recognition extending to the observation that the substrate itself may be conformationally restricted to assist binding in the confined space of the active site and for subsequent processing. The cations occupy a crowded environment, and, unlike most Zn2+ -dependent enzymes, there is little scope to increase co-ordination number during catalysis.We propose that the presence of a bridging water/hydroxide ligand in conjunction with the placement of an active site histidine supports a distinctive amidation mechanism.</p

[Resumo] O concello lugués da Fonsagrada alberga un rico patrimonio etnográfico e natural que apenas se está a poñer en valor actualmente, nin con iniciativas públicas nin privadas para o desenvolvemento socioeconómico dunha zona rural que precisa con urxencia de propostas de revitalización económica e sociocultural que fixen a poboación no territorio, impidan ou minoricen o paulatino esmorecemento deste, e melloren o benestar social da cidadanía. As respostas que ante este panorama ofrecerían iniciativas de carácter educativo-ambiental, así como lúdicas e turísticas tendedes á revalorización dos recursos endóxenos que atesoura o concello, case non se teñen producido polo momento: trátase dunha considerable perda de oportunidades para a dinamización económica e fortalecemento sociocultural desta área territorial, situación que o deseño dun proxecto de dinamización sustentable centrado neste concello toma como punto de inicio para contribuír á transformación desta inxusta realidade[Abstract] The town hall lugués of A Fonsagrada lodges a rich ethnographic and natural patrimony that scarcely is putting itself in value at present, or with public or private initiatives for the socio-economic development in a rural area that urgently needs economic and socio-cultural revitalization proposals specified in the population in the territory, prevent or minoricen its progressive regression and improve the social welfare of the citizenship. Experimental study of the gustatory system connections in the lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula)

[Resumen] El sistema gustativo central ha sido muy estudiado en ciertos grupos de teleósteos como ciprínidos e ictalúridos, sin embargo es prácticamente desconocido en elasmobranquios. Con la intención de esclarecer cuáles son los principales centros de integración de la información gustativa y visceral y cuáles son las proyecciones eferentes de dichos centros en peces cartilaginosos, en el presente estudio se tomó como representante al tiburón pintarroja (Scyliorhinus canicula), en el que se realizaron experimentos de trazado neuronal con la carbocianina lipofílica DiI. Nuestros resultados mostraron unas pocas proyecciones eferentes que viajan a lo largo de un tracto ascendente: el tracto gustativo secundario, que termina a nivel del istmo. Se ha inferido la localización de un supuesto núcleo gustatorio secundario mediante sus proyecciones hipotalámicas. La escasez de neuronas en el núcleo gustatorio secundario sugiere que los elasmobranquios poseen un sistema gustativo reducido comparado con la mayoría de peces teleósteos.[Abstract] The central gustatory system has been widely studied in some teleostean groups such as cyprinids and ictalurids, however this system is mostly unknown in elasmobranchs. With the aim of describing the main gustative and visceral integration centers and its afferent projections in cartilaginous fish in the present study we have chosen the lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) as a representative species for this group, in which we carried out tract-tracing experiments using the lipophilic carbocyanine dye DiI. Our results showed a few efferent projections from the primary centers, coursing along an ascending tract, the secondary gustatory tract, that ends at the isthmal level. The location of the putative secondary gustatory nucleus was also infered by its hypothalamic projection. The scarcity of neurons in the secondary gustatoy nucleus suggests that elasmobranchs posses a reduced gustatory system compared to most teleostean fish.Traballo fin de grao (UDC.CIE). Bioloxía. Computers and learning in the third age: international studies from 1990 to 2011

El propósito de esta investigación es discernir terminología adecuada para realizar búsquedas precisas en los tesauros internacionales para estudiar las tendencias de las investigaciones relacionadas con tercera edad y uso de los ordenadores desde 1990 hasta la actualidad. Mediante una búsqueda pormenorizada en bases de datos de marcado prestigio educativo internacional se seleccionaron 34 investigaciones en el área. Utilizando el método científico histórico y el método de análisis cualitativo de datos se observaron que las tendencias principales de los estudios sobre mayores y su uso del ordenador se dirigen hacia: la tipología de uso (fundamentalmente, e-mails); las motivaciones; los estilos y características del aprendizaje; la alfabetización tecnológica; los estudios intergeneracionales; y el e-learning.The purpose of this research is to discern appropriate international terminology for precise searches in the international thesauri, as well as studying trends of international investigations relating to old people and use of computers since 1990. 34 Investigations in the area were selected in prestige international database. The Virgin of the Sagrario in Hispanic America. About a painting by Francisco Rizi

En esta ocasión nos disponemos a abordar el estudio de las relaciones artísticas que existieron entre la Catedral de Toledo e Hispanoamérica durante la Edad Moderna; lo haremos tomando como ejemplo la pintura de la Virgen del Sagrario realizada en 1672 por Francisco Rizi, pintor oficial del templo, para ser enviada a Puebla de los Ángeles (México) a petición de Manuel Miranda Palomeque. A través del conjunto de documentos conservados en el Archivo Capitular de Toledo, algunos de ellos inéditos, tendremos la oportunidad de conocer los entresijos de este encargo, los pagos efectuados, su relación con otras obras así como la gran veneración que gozó la Virgen del Sagrario en Nueva España.On this occasion we will study the artistic relations that existed between the Cathedral of Toledo and Hispano-America during the Modern Age; We will take as an example the painting of the Virgen del Sagrario made in 1672 by Francisco Rizi, the temple's official painter, to be sent to Puebla de los Ángeles (Mexico) at the request of Manuel Miranda Palomeque. Through the set of documents preserved in the Archive of Cathedral of Toledo, some of them unpublished, we will have the opportunity to know the ins and outs of this commission, the payments made, their relationship with other works as well as the great veneration enjoyed by the Virgin of the Tabernacle In New Spain
